Tell me a little about your goals and the situations in which you would most like to use Portuguese. You are welcome to write in whichever language is most comfortable for you.
How would you describe your current speaking and listening ability? Please also mention any previous Portuguese study or experience. You do not need to know your official level.
Would you prefer private lessons or a small-group class? If you already have friends, family members,
or colleagues who would like to study with you, I would be happy to hear about that, too.
A complimentary 20-minute trial lesson will give us an opportunity to discuss your goals,
explore how the lessons work, and determine the most suitable level and type of lesson for you.
Learn How to Learn Portuguese
Learning to communicate in Portuguese requires more than attending weekly classes.
Real progress begins when you know what to study, how to practice,
and how to make Portuguese a regular part of your daily life.
Learning a language has much in common with learning a musical instrument or developing skill in a sport. Confidence develops gradually through focused practice, repetition, variation, and regular feedback.
With a realistic plan and consistent effort, you can make steady progress from one level to the next.
My lessons give you a practical method for improving your Portuguese both in class and independently.
We work on clear pronunciation from the beginning because it helps other people understand you
and trains your ear to understand spoken Portuguese.
You will listen regularly to Portuguese that is appropriate for your level.
You will practice varying simple sentences and answers so that you can speak more spontaneously.
Short, focused study periods and varied activities will help you build useful vocabulary
and enjoy communicating at every stage.
I will help you establish a realistic daily routine and encourage you to practice every day, however briefly. Even on a busy day, one to five minutes of focused practice keeps Portuguese active in your mind,
reinforces the habit, and produces benefits far beyond the time invested.
When time allows, you can complete one to three focused twenty-minute sessions.
Daily consistency pays off far more than occasional long study sessions.
What Can You Expect at Each Level?
At every level, you will make mistakes when speaking.
That is a natural and necessary part of learning—even advanced speakers do.
The goal is not to make every sentence flawless, but to communicate with increasing clarity and confidence.
These abilities develop through regular practice, not through lessons alone.
Real conversations will initially seem much harder than classroom material.
Daily listening trains your ear and continually expands your vocabulary.
Daily sentence practice helps move useful words into your active vocabulary.
Together, these habits help you understand more and communicate with greater ease over time.
A1
You begin handling simple, predictable situations.
You can introduce yourself, give basic personal information, and ask and answer familiar questions.
You can order food or drinks and understand common expressions.
When someone speaks slowly and clearly, you can take part in a short conversation with some help.
A2
You become more independent.
You can talk about your routine, home, family, health, shopping, and past experiences in simple language. You can understand the main point of short, clear exchanges about familiar subjects.
You can manage many ordinary situations in Portugal.
You will still sometimes need repetition or help.
B1
You can take part in longer conversations about familiar subjects.
You can describe experiences and explain your opinions in straightforward language.
You can understand the main points of clear speech.
You can handle most predictable situations in daily life.
You will still miss some words and details.
When something is unfamiliar, you will know how to keep the conversation going.
Why Learn with Me?
I am an experienced language teacher and an adult language learner myself.
I speak several European languages, so I understand the particular challenges adults face
when learning Portuguese and using it in daily life.
My classes combine clear explanations with plenty of speaking, listening, and pronunciation practice.
More importantly, I teach you how to keep learning outside the classroom.
Your steady progress will help you become more independent and confident
—and participate more fully in Portuguese life.
